ILLINOIS REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR CANDIDATE, KIRK DILLARD'S LEGISLATION SUPPORTING ILLINOIS RED CROSS SIGNED INTO LAW
Monday, August 05, 2013
Legislation sponsored by State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) was recently signed into law establishing a specialty Red Cross license plate. Dillard said the plate created by Senate Bill 1439/PA 98-0151 not only gives motorists the opportunity to show their support for the Red Cross, but will also generate revenue for the organization’s life-saving work.
“The American/Illinois Red Cross provides vitally important community service, disaster relief and health and safety preparedness,” said Dillard. “I was particularly impressed by the outreach services they offer to our military members and their families, but as a Dad I thank God for the invaluable First Aid, CPR and water safety information the Red Cross has taught millions of parents, grandparents and caregivers over the years.”
The Red Cross is the largest non-profit, non-governmental, volunteer-led organization in America. Senator Dillard noted the organization offers much-needed assistance to state’s veterans, military men and women, and their families. In Illinois almost 10,000 members of the military participated in the “Get to Know Us Before You Need Us” program and 4,156 Red Cross emergency communications were sent between military members and their families.
In 2011 the Illinois Red Cross received assistance from more than 14,500 community service volunteers and 2,416 families received disaster aid from the organization. In fact, the Illinois Red Cross arranged 1,654 locally-funded disaster operations. The father of two young children, Dillard underscored the importance of the health and safety preparedness services provided by the Illinois Red Cross; 162,298 Illinoisans enrolled in First Aid, CPR and/or AED courses in 2011 and 119,685 enrolled in aquatics courses, which teach lifeguarding skills and water safety.
“Chartered by the United States Congress in 1900 and 1905, the Red Cross continues its mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need,” said W. Bryan Soady, Illinois’ Director of Government & External Relations for the American Red Cross.
